Aberdare, the area we are located is Kenya's biggest water tower. We want it to remain that way for eternity, so we are aware that the only way to ensure that is to take great care of our environment. We are an eco-lodge focused on protecting Waterways and water catchment areas with over 2,000 bamboos growing on our space. We keep electricity use to a bare minimum, we...... even use an ecological water heating system to ensure hot water flows, and together we help save the earth and you shall also get a chance in helping us on this whilst you stay at Aberdare Cottages and Fishing Lodge. All waste from the kitchen and restaurant is sorted and separated. Food leftovers especially vegetables, fruits and fresh produce with effective Microorganisms that later on could be used as a part of the bio-fertilizer that used to degrade the natural trash like leaves. Also, we had made our own organic dish-washing soap or versatile solution used in our entire property. These are totally non-toxic to everyone. Aberdare Cottages and Fishing Lodge also continuously engage in external environmental activities such as planting trees, and conserving water bodies and waterways in partnership with like minded people and entities.
We hold high the value of a good education, and for this cause we started The Gacharage-ini Community Library in 2009 with the help of our partners The Kids Library Trust, BookAid and Aggreko UK and we run it to date. This is done by ensuring the day to day running of the library. The library helps community members who don't have access to study material in our rural setting. We serve the community by providing them access to literature in an Eco-environment. The library is free and open to all 7 days a week.
Sustainable tourism ensures that tourist attraction sites and activities are preserved being maintained for current as well as future generations. We support and encourage diverse sports travel experiences for both spectators and participants, acknowledging the importance of embracing fitness and as such, majority of our activities are outdoors. We have been hosting an......... annual Road bicycle competition dubbed Aberdare C70 Madaraka Road Biking Challenge since 2015 and it happens every 1st of June except in 2020 due to the countrywide lock-down due to the Covid19 pandemic. We also support diverse sports touristic activities like Mountain Bike Gravel Rides, Running, Duathlons, as well as Marathons by hosting the events at our Murang'a countryside lodge, attending and sponsoring sports events fully or partially, and sponsoring sports professionals who participate in sporting activities.
Being able to reliably obtain, consume and metabolize sufficient quantities of safe and nutritious and foods, is essential to human well-being. In order to ensure and safeguard availability, access, stability, and utilization of food at the lodge and surroundings, we have an organic farm at our rustic countryside cottage. At the organic farm we grow tea, trees, as well as....... local and exotic produce. We also grow vegetables like Broccoli, Cabbages, Mint, Bell Pepper (Pilipili Hoho), Red Peppers, Onions, Spinach, Kales (Sukumawiki). Some of the fruits we grow include Strawberries, Avocado, Passion fruit, and Guava. We also rear farm animals like Rabbits, Chicken, and Dogs. The organic farm is open for visits from children and organized groups.
